What is Suboxone?

SuboxoneSuboxone is a combination of two different active ingredients, Buprenorphine and Naloxone. Buprenorphine is a partial opiate agonist. This means it shares some but not all of the features of opiates such as morphine and Heroin. Naloxone is an opiate antagonist. This means it blocks the euphoric effects of all opiates. Suboxone is a commercial preparation which is prescribed in the United States only by physicians who have taken a course and passed a test to obtain a special DEA (Drug Enforcement Administration) license in order to be permitted to prescribe it for its only indication, treatment of opiate abuse, which is an illness described in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of the American Psychiatric Association.
